2025 SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION - MBA SELINAH NWOKOLU FOUNDATION - Scheduled for Feb 15th, 2025 - ( Class: Undergraduate )
WHO IS CHIEF (MRS.) MBA SELINAH NWOKOLU-NTE, (JP) PHD
Chief (Mrs.) Mba Selinah Nwokolu-Nte, (JP) PhD was a virtuous woman and means many things to her generation. She was a mother not only to her children but to everyone around her. She was a sister not only to those who are biologically related to her. As a friend, she is dependable, one you can trust and count on. As counselor she is an instrument of hope and an agent of mending broken homes and a crusader of education and empowerment of the Girl Child.
Dr. Mba was born on the 4th day of March 1967 in Alago, Yaba in Lagos State into the family of Late Pa Alfred Alesi of Okpa Community, Agbonchia clan in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State. She was the 4th child of her parents.
Dr. Mba was enthusiastic about education as she understands the beauty and importance of education, more especially the education of the Girl Child in the society. She stated that for her to truly motivate and inspire the Girl Child despite the challenges that life may tend to serve, she will strive to get to the peak of her studies, which she did before her demise. She is a strong proponent of the fact that the Girl Child should have either formal or informal education to enable the Girl Child to be useful to the family and the society at large.
As a young girl, she attended the Yaba Methodist School II Yaba, Lagos State and graduated in 1976 where she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC).
After the conclusion of her primary school her father (Late Pa Alfred Alesi) decided to enroll her at the Government Girls Secondary School, Harbour Road, Port Harcourt in 1976 and graduated in 1981 where she obtained her West Africa Examination Council (WAEC).
Dr. Mba got married to HRH Emere Dr. Nwokolu Dimkpa Nte (JP) in 1985 and between 1997 and 1998 she served as the Chairperson of Eleme Local Government Area. As Chairperson of Eleme LGA, she nurtured and supervised the activities of Family Support Program (FSP) which was the pet project of the then wife of the Military Governor of Rivers State, Mrs. Dauda Musa Shehu in Eleme where she was given an Award of Excellence as the best performing chairperson in the state. Dr. Mba's activities on the education of the Girl Child during her reign endeared her to the wife of the Governor.
To some being married with children is enough reason to remain academically stagnant as there are lots of distractions, limited time to study and zero motivation to return back to the classroom. To Dr. Mba, that was not the case. Even after giving birth to six (6) children ( all boys) and taking care of her family/home, coupled with work pressure, church engagements and other extra curriculum activities - She decided to return to the classroom and improve herself. It was indeed not an easy task but she loved and embraced all the inconveniences that accompanied her passion to return back to the classroom.
Dr. Mba applied and got admitted to study Sociology in the prestigious University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) where she graduated in 2003 with Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Sociology.
After her graduation, she proceeded to do her Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Sociology and she concluded the program in 2011.
In the quest to further her studies, she applied once again to the University of Port Harcourt and got admitted in 2011 to do her Masters of Science (MSc) and graduated in 2013.
Dr. Mba loved academic activities as same gave her so much joy and happiness. She was a firm believer that education is power, more especially to the Girl Child, and the Girl Child must strive to be the best. It was this drive that led her to enroll for her PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in Social Works with the University of Port Harcourt where she rounded up the program in 2021.
Dr. Mba was sociable, friendly, meek, lovable, hospitable and a good woman to be with and have as a friend. She is someone you can count on and believe in. Her nature endeared her to have lots of friends which cut across those she grew up with, classmates and colleagues both at school and work.
As a result of her passion for the empowerment of the Girl Child, Dr. Mba was appointed by late Chief Mrs. Amasi Otanku of blessed memory as the Secretary of Agbonchia Women Council of Chiefs. She was also appointed as the Secretary of the Eleme Women Council of Traditional Rulers before her demise. As the Secretary she carried out her duties diligently to the satisfaction of all Council members and HRM Emereowa Evelyn Ada Gokpa (the Queen Mother of Eleme Kingdom).
As a wife she was loving, caring, and understanding. Dr. Mba is a complete woman who understands the gimmicks of marriage all in the interest of peace in her home. No wonder, during the thick of the political and community crisis that bedeviled HRH Emere (Dr.) Nwokolu Dimkpa Nte (JP), she was a complete support system to her husband. Dr. Mba is a true definition of a virtuous woman.
As a mother, Dr. Mba was a true definition of what motherhood should be. She nurtured her home through the fear of God and instilled sound moral background for the growth of her children and other children that lived with her. She cared and loved her children passionately.
As a Christian, Dr. Mba loved the things of God and was dedicated to the service of God and humanity. She attended Assemblies of God Church, Agbonchia, Eleme/Tai District where she held and occupied several positions before her demise. Her passion for education even in the church enabled her to serve as a Board member of the Governors for Evangel School, Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday School Department and the Sectional Sunday School Secretary, etc.
As a Counsellor, she was able to offer herself as a tool for modeling and reshaping lives through wise counsel she offered to people who came to her with their challenges. Through her and by the grace of God, lots of broken homes were mended/reunited, young teens were able to see reasons to make their lives meaningful and the girl child was given a platform to become useful to the family for the overall interest of the society.
MBA SELINAH NWOKOLU FOUNDATION
Dreams and aspirations are a fundamental tool in reshaping human history and the quest to make life better is key to transformation of the human race.
For Dr. Mba she has a quest to transform the lives of the Girl-Child into understanding her role as a builder of homes and the nation.
Dr. Mba was a strong proponent for the education and empowerment of the Girl-Child. To her once the Girl-Child is educated, there is hope and future for the society. The Girl-Child grows into a mother capable of producing good home/family and in the future will export the product of her home/family into the society. The quality of the export is a reflection of what the society is today.
This is the essence of MSNF which is targeted at ensuring that the dreams and aspirations of Dr. Mba for a better society is guaranteed through empowerment of the Nigerian Girl-Child.
