PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF SOIL JSS2 CLASS
By the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
1. Define soil
2. State the properties of soil.
Soil
Soil is the top most layer of the earth which is made from rocks that have eroded by the process called weathering.
Characteristics of Soil types
Sandy soil
1. They are coarse and gritty to
touch.
2. It is rich in nutrient.
3. They are well drained and easy to
work upon.
4. If a soil has 70% sand it is said to
be sandy.
Clay soil
1. They are sticky when wet and
easily eroded.
2. It has high water holding
capacity.
3. They are poorly drained and
waterlogged.
Loamy soil:
1. It has equal proportion of sand,
silt and clay.
2. It is rich in nutrient.
3. It combines with good properties
of sand and chemical properties
of clay.
Soil profile: this is the vertical section of the soil showing series of horizontal layers of different soil types.
Soil texture: this is the relative proportion of various sizes of different soil samples.
Soil structure shows the various arrangement of different soil sizes.
Class work
1. What is soil.
2. State two organism found in the
soil.
Assignment
1. Give five differences between
clay and sandy soil.
2. What is soil texture.
